Working The Stem

The title pretty much says it all. This week has been devoted to gluing up, cleaning up, and beginning encapsulation on the stem. This piece is made from three pieces of 3/4 inch marine grade plywood, cut to shape and then laminated together with thickened epoxy.

The process is, coat the parts with an initial coat of unthickened epoxy, followed by a coat of thickened epoxy (before the initial coat has set up). Then lay the two parts together in the jig and connect together with bronze wood screws. As always, the holes should be pre-drilled. A few screws should be driven home to insure the parts stay aligned before drilling the remaining holes and driving the remaining screws.

It took me three evenings to sand down the glue that squeezed out. I am always careful about not applying too much pressure when attaching the parts together, but I also tend to liberally coat with resin, so inevitably, there is squeeze out. The reason it took so long is because my air compressor is inadequate to maintain high enough air pressure to efficiently run the high speed grinder I sanded with. Also, I was short on sanding discs and they tend to get dull fairly quickly when sanding epoxy.



 Before beginning the glue up process, it is advisable to have as much ready to go as possible, since the resin will want to kick off as you get near the end of the process. So I measured out and marked the screw holes beforehand. The holes near the outer edge must be far enough back from the edge to avoid interfering with future fairing of the stem forward edge.

The forward edge of the stem will eventually be where the two sides of the skin of the boat meet at the bow. The cross section of this area will be changed from square as it is currently, to more triangular shaped. This is because the forward edge will be planed and sanded down so the skins lie flat on the forward part of the stem. I will illustrate this in a future posting.



A simple alignment jig was used to keep the parts in alignment while the gluing and fastening process was accomplished. It is important to cover the area beneath the stem with wax paper, as well as the alignment blocks, so that they dont get glued to the stem. Once the parts were screwed together, the blocks were removed and some squeezed out glue was cleaned up.




Here is the stem after the epoxy has cured. Some areas of squeezed out resin were worse than others.



The sanding of the stem in progress.All edges needed to be cleaned up. I use the shop vac to suck up the dust as it is generated by the sander. This requires me to hold the hose in one hand and the sander in the other. Therefore, the part must be stabilized so it wont move. It is also important to keep the sander moving all the time so that dips and gouges arent created in the wood.

I try to keep a fairly light touch and sand gradually rather than trying to press hard and sand quickly. I only used the high speed sander on the edges and any large chunks of resin that might have gotten onto the flat surfaces. I used an orbital sander and a light touch to clean up the flat areas so there was less risk of sanding through the plies.

In addition to the vacuum, it is a good idea to have ventilation and a respirator or dust mask to keep from breathing the sanding dust.



After glue clean up, the stem needs to be coated with epoxy like the frames. Since this area is more likely to come in contact with water, I am giving it an extra coat of epoxy. Like the frames, there is no point in coating the outside edge yet, because this edge will receive considerable planing and sanding later in the build. I am coating the inside edge, however, since little structure will be attached to that edge. In the areas where the frames are attached to the inner edge, I am only applying an initial coat of epoxy since more resin will eventually be applied there as well.

This process should take a few more days. I will also begin work on the knee. The knee is a "L" shaped brace that connects the keel to the transom. This will be described and illustrated in a later article. Thats it for this week.

Reality

I wrote this article many years ago. With the exception of the name of the main character, Mike Rowe (...Micro....), it is a true story.
Lying on the foredeck, Mike Rowe stared down the stem and contemplated the bow-wave of the small wooden boat. Behind him, and beyond the source of the regular “putoonk, putoonk, putoonk” emitted by the exhaust, Ken Foster sprawled in the stern sheets with his left arm laid out along the tiller. Ken’s look was distant, but relaxed. 

The boat these men were operating was of the simplest type. Built half-a-dozen decades earlier of inch-thick topside planking, with inch-and-a-half on the bottom, she carried the scars of her life as a fishing boat and hire vessel. Although she could not hide her age, she had done what the other boats in the harbour could not – she had aged gracefully.



Recent events had been kind to this beautiful boat.  

Ken had seen an entry in the classified section of the paper, offering some of a hire-boat fleet for sale. The business had changed hands and the owners were equipping themselves with a bunch of new, outboard-powered tinnies. Good business sense? Time would tell. 

At first sight, a lesser man than Ken could have been put off the deal. What paint remained was cracked and peeling, oil and fish scales lay in the bilge, and the motor emitted blue smoke and rusty water. The planking and framing showed evidence of “quick-and-dirty” running repairs, in which chopped-strand fiberglass mat starred prominently.  

Several months of hard labour had given Ken a renovated boat and a restored engine. New timber melded with old in a way which would have clashed in a more pretentious vessel, but which looked just right on this one. Brightwork was minimal, the paintwork was done in green and buff, and the engine displayed red paint, brushed bronze and drips of oil.  



Mike Rowe and his son had left the workshop early in order to go for a ride in Ken’s boat. They were planning the construction of a new putt-putt boat and intended to use a W.M. Olds & Sons 4-6hp four-stroke also. This was an ideal opportunity to sample the experience. For over a year, their engine had sat silently in the workshop, moving only when one of them put on a few drops of oil and then turned it over by hand to feel the compression. Imaginations had run gently wild. 

As Ken turned the crank-handle and his engine throbbed into life, they looked at each other in silent agreement. This was really good! Weather conditions were such that a trip around the harbour was more suitable that fighting the steep Moreton Bay chop whipped up by several days of 25 to 30 knot winds. The boat would have handled it without trouble, but that wasn’t the aim of the afternoon. 

They spent over an hour touring the yacht harbour, and in that time they made some interesting observations. At one point they stopped to examine a putt-putt of a similar size to Ken’s. This boat was lapstrake (clinker) but made of moulded fiberglass. She carried all of the standard add-ons which are thought necessary to make a “character” boat – bits of teak, brass bow-chocks and bollards, a heavily varnished rudder and tiller…  

Viewed amongst the surrounding plastic and alloy yachts, the ‘glass launch looked interesting and wholesome. But when Ken’s old thumper was tied-up near by, the new boat just looked silly. Despite having cost a tiny fraction of the price of the clinker production boat, the old and worn fishing boat won the looks contest hands-down. 



Our trio felt no envy as they toured lines of millionaire’s play boats, but the eyes of many observers followed them with interest. Which boat was delivering the most fun for the dollar? 

The bow-wave peeled off the side of the boat in a clean curl, swept down low amidships and rose to leave the transom in a gentle boil of prop wash and wake. Mike Rowe would have been happy to view this scene for hours, and he was captivated by the sense of speed. This speed seemed miraculous given the modest number of putts-per-minute, and the gentle rate at which the heavy flywheel was turning. 

Although Mike was a sailor by nature, he found the motion of this fine boat to be incredibly relaxing. The frequency of the engine sound was soothing, and the noise level low enough to allow easy conversation. Despite this, the occupants did little talking. Instead, they absorbed the sounds of the water passing the boat, felt the wind in their hair, and drifted within their own minds. 


Little wonder then, that these three people came ashore feeling relaxed and happy. Later, as they drove out of the car park, they saw a man who had glanced at their boat as he tied up his massive power cruiser. The man did not notice them this time, as they sat in the ute. He was concentrating on traffic while waiting for an opportunity to turn onto the main road. The big BMW accelerated past, and Mike Rowe observed that the man’s face looked fixed and preoccupied...

More Interesting Work from the Workshop circa 2004

Around 2004 we were building at least six boats at one time in the old workshop - with only three-and-a-half people on the job. It was a hectic time, and looking back on it, we did some creative stuff. At one point a customer decided that his outboard-powered boat (a Phil Bolger Hope which we were building with a lapstrake hull and a small cuddy cabin) would be better as a diesel in-board, even though she was nearly finished in the outboard configuration.. I quickly designed an inovative skeg arrangement, and we carried out substantial structural modifications to accept the Yanmar 1GM10 deisel.

The nature of the retro-fitted keel/skeg was such that I thought it needed extra support against side loads and so I made a pattern for a cast bronze propeller shaft strut which had an inverted "V" on the upper side of the bearing. Not an original thought, but my first attempt at pattern making, which had been made necessary by the extreme urgency of the situation. The foundryman was a marine specialist (Marine Castings and Manufacturing - still in business) and was (to my surprise) happy with the pattern. Not only did he cast the prop strut, but he cast and machined the propeller, and the water-injected dripless-seal. Everything worked!

Battens Cut and Fit

My battens have now been ripped and fit to the frames. I had to deepen the pre-cut notches to get the battens to lay flush with the frame contours. Per the "Boatbuilding with Plywood" book, battens should be installed after side planking, so I used some steel screws for temporary dry fit so they can be removed if in the way for subsequent work. They helped secure the frames in position so Ill leave them in place if possible.




The sides of the middle frame were unsupported and could easily be pushed out of plumb so I added a temporary cross beam and some angle braces from it to the form to stablize them. Now they can be worked on without moving around.


The next step is fitting the chines. You can see in the photo that Im experimenting with a piece of pine to judge whether my notches are right. Im letting my buddy Ted forge ahead with his Zip and of course he just tried steaming his chines and installing and broke one. Im taking a vacation so the boat will be on hold for awhile. Maybe when I get back, Ted will tell me how to install a chine without making expensive mohogany firewood.

Landstrom did not suggest a direct connection between the Scandinavian skin boats and the umiak --rather, he suggested that Scandinavians had skin boats that were similar in some respects to umiaks, but he did not imply a technology transfer between the cultures. I also found more detailed description of the Hjortspring boats design and construction, some of which contradicts my interpretation of the painting that appeared in the previous post:
The Hjortspring boat with its peculiarities was the result of a very skilful builders work. It is a round-bottomed boat made of five overlapping planks stitched together, midships 20 ins. broad and 5/8 ins. thick, which are joined to two end-pieces each hewn from a solid block. The bottom plank projects like the end of a runner outside the boat proper, and between this runner and the elongated "noses" of the end-pieces these remarkable vertical end-posts are fitted. When hewing the planks cleats were left into which thin ribs were attached with bass binding. Ten thwarts in the narrow boat gave room for twenty paddlers, and it is believed that the craft was used for warlike purposes.
With its overlapping planks, this boat is approaching subject matter that this blog typically eschews: it appears to be in the line of development to the lapstrake boat thats at the heart of the western boatbuilding tradition. The description of the end-pieces does seem to be similar to those of the Polynesian five-part canoe, which I had discounted in my previous post.
